TEA WHISK HAMLET

This course includes the Takayama bamboo grove, with its beautiful Japanese garden, Takayama castle ruins, said to have been home to Takayama , Enrakuji Temple ruins with the Takayama family tomb, the tea whisk hamlet and the Takayama Hachimangu Shrine with its plethora of cultural heritage sites.

TEA WHISK HAMLET

1. Takayama Bamboo Garden and Museum (Takayama Chikurinn-en)

Bamboo themed objects such as knitting needles and tea ceremony utensils including tea whisks are on display at this museum. A Japanese style ecological bamboo garden is also open for public. In October, Bamboo related Event named "Ikoma/Takayama Tea Party and Bamboo illumination evening" is held where bamboo made objects are displayed and tea ceremony is held.

2. Takayama Castle Ruins

218m above sea level, at a relative height of 40m and covering an area approximately 100 m x 110m. The enclosure of earthen walls confirmed, the bifurcated mountain top has left a flat area of 60m x 70cm. The castle is said to have been the residence of Takayama.

3. Enrakuji Temple ruins of Ikoma City Takayama Bamboo Grove

5 tiered stone tombs first appeared in the 9th year of Meio (1500). The memorial tower of the Takayama family remains to this day despite many being destroyed during the anti Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji era.

4. Tea Whisk Hamlet

Takayama town in Ikoma City has become an area synonymous with tea ceremony and tea whisk (chasen) production.
Known as the tea whisk hamlet, the area accounts for 90% of domestic production of tea whisks with direct sales offices and factories dotting the town.

5. Takayama Hachimangu Shrine

When Yahatano-kami (Hachiman God) was invited from Ohita Prefecture to be the guardian deity for Todaiji temple’s Great Buddha in 749 AD, Yahatano-kami stayed here before arriving at Todaiji Temple. The main shrine is designated as an important cultural property of the nation because the building was built during Muromachi period (1392-1573 AD) and it holds the feature of the late Muromachi period construction.
